How smarties can help you succeed in school and in your life after school

If only I could draw a link between smarties chocolate and your success. Sadly, I cannot.

I can however, show you how smarties goal setting can help you succeed in school. I know, I know, it’s much less fun than chocolate but it is a great deal more important and relevant to you!

No doubt, by now you might have heard of smart goal setting. SMARTIES is an extension of that idea. It is an acronym for the types of goals that will ensure your success:

  • Specific
  • Measurable
  • Achievable
  • Realistic
  • Time bound
  • Inspirational
  • Emotional and leading to
  • Success

The last three elements (inspirational, emotional and leading to success) are actually the most important of all. These elements re what will kick your gears into action and make sure that you succeed in achieving your goals rather than procrastinating on them.

Smarties goals are crucial if you want to start improving your results at school. Heck, setting goals in general will have a huge impact on your success in school, especially if you’re in your last few years of high school.

Goals give you something to aim for. Without this aim, you may not be able to easily navigate your way to success because you won’t know what that looks like for you. Let alone what the journey to success would look like and what steps you’ll need to take.

Towards the last few years of high school, you are increasingly faced with the decision of what to do with yourself after school’s over. Unless standardised testing is abolished (which doesn’t seem to be the case right now) the opportunities you will have access to in the future are dependent on your results in school. At least to start off with.

For now, academic success for you could just mean opening up the doors you want to have access to immediately once you finish school. For this to be your reality, well, you need to know what you’re aiming for. What specific opportunities do you want to have access to?

More importantly, what specific actions do you need to take while in school to make these opportunities available?

Let’s be honest here, if you are like most students, you are not going to need to achieve 100% in every exam for every subject. For most people, that’s a ridiculous thing to aim for and is totally unnecessary! Not to mention that with the amount of energy and effort required for you to achieve that you will most likely burn yourself out before you even sit your exams.

So rather than aiming for something that requires a heap of energy, but is not totally necessary for you, we suggest a smarter strategy. Aim for the things that are 100% directly relevant to you and work backwards from there. Eventually you will find out the exact marks you will need to score in your exams and you will find out the specific things you need to do in order to achieve those grades.

That’s what success looks like because that’s the strategy that will ensure you open up the doors you want opened. For practical instructions on how you can set smarties goals, check out Chapter 3 in the Study Hacker book .
